28 Jun ZooBorns – Two Coati Kits Surprise Zoo Budapest
An elderly South American Coati has unexpectedly given birth to two healthy kittens at Zoo Budapest.
Wild Coatis are known to have a life expectancy of only seven to eight years. However in human care they’ve been known to extend that expectancy to live up to 17 years old. The mother of these young; Juliet, is currently 15 years.
Zoo Budapest admitted “it is almost a matter of biological peculiarity” that she had successfully given birth to two healthy kittens at her advanced age. At four years old, the pups’ sire has also only been sexually mature for about half a year, making the parents quite the unlikely pair!
