06 Oct Press Release – A Daughter for the Phantom of the Andes – La Reserva
For the first time in history one of the world’s least known mammals, the western mountain coati (Nasuella olivacea), has conceived and given birth in human care. Two months since the delivery “the offspring is enjoying excellent health, this is the result of a scientific effort that took more than decade” says Ivan Lozano-Ortega Director of Colombia’s Bioparque La Reserva in Cota, Colombia.
Because of its elusive behaviour the Mountain Coati, found only in the cloud forest and Páramo of Colombia and Ecuador, is sometimes known as the Ghost of the Andes. The International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) classifies it as Near Threatened (NT).
