Brevard Zoo – Encouraging a More Natural Social Structure for their Coati Band

Brevard Zoo – Encouraging a More Natural Social Structure for their Coati Band

Brevard Zoo’s two Coati bands are getting to know each other in a new shared habitat!

Plans were put on hold after an unexpected delay, having a health scare with younger Coati Agave. Brevard Zoo staff have finally allowed their three younger coatis, (or kits), to interact with their other two older Coati residents.

This change in their group set ups will let this social species the chance to have a more natural social structure in their care. While they are under the age of two, Coatis will typically coexist with both sexes and in groups up to 20 individuals from birth

In December 2020, construction began to expand the coati habitat at Brevard with the goal of caring for breeding pairs in the future.
